Philosophy / Techniques / Sustainable Agriculture
We strongly believe in the principles and practices of Sustainable Agriculture. We grow all our plants on our farm and in our own greenhouses using farm produced composts as well as Daddy Pete's Plant Pleaser products. We are purchasing our potting soils from Daddy Pete's Farms in Stoney Point NC because we believe in supporting local farm businesses. Daddy Pete's is a NC Century Farm. We fertilize with Espoma Plantone with beneficial bacteria , along with "Nature's Nog" seaweed, and fish emulsion. To find out more about one of our favorite products, "Nature's Nog", go to Dr Tee Senn's website http://www.thenogstore.com. This is definitely the best seaweed and humate product available. We've been using it for years and believe it is integral to our success. Only accepted organic pest controls are used when needed. These may include Soaps, Oils, Neem, Pyrethrum, Rotenone, Bt, and beneficial insects. For us, part of sustainable agriculture means reducing as much off farm input as possible and we are constantly striving to do just that.
We were Certified Organic for years through Carolina Farm Stewardship Assoc., but have chosen not to pursue the national organic certification for philosophical differences of opinions regarding that process. We still use the same organic practices as before because it's just what we believe in. (If you are looking for a very appropriated alternative to the NOP, check out Certified Naturally Grown.) Very importantly though, we grow only open pollinated and heirloom plants
We were awarded the Outstanding Achievement award for Sustainable Agriculture in Yancey County in 2006 by the NCSU Extension Agency.
We are also members of ASAP…the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project… and their certified "Appalachian Grown" program.
